Ahuva Michael shares her journey towards earning her Bachelor's in Psychology - Social Work Track.

How did you first hear about Sara Schenirer?

I have many friends who completed the program following seminary, so I definitely knew about Sara Schenirer. After returning from Israel, I took a break from school for a few years to work full time and when I was considering college, I saw an advertisement for Sara Schenirer and it brought it back to the forefront of my mind. It was important to me to be in a Jewish environment, and I was also looking for a program that had a live class component. Other options I researched only consisted of self-study courses and exams. I personally love in-class learning and it just made sense for me to be in a classroom setting.

What inspired you to pursue the BA in Psychology - Social Work Track?

I’ve always been interested in psychology and specifically social work, so it was a bonus that Sara Schenirer offered the social work track within the degree program. Graduating with my bachelor’s with a focus in that area is an advantage for when I continue to my master’s degree.

How prepared did you feel when you first started? What surprised you most about your classes?

I had a general background in psychology from reading and listening to podcasts on the subject, so I felt prepared to grasp the material. What surprised me the most, though, was how much I enjoyed the actual courses and being in the classroom. I love every minute of class and when the two hours are up, I always wish we could continue. I also am amazed at just how much information I have gained in the field of social work.

What has been your favorite part of your experience so far? Most challenging?

My professors are knowledgeable and experienced, and I learn so much from them. They are all approachable and responsive as well. I love being in class and find the lessons interesting and stimulating. In high school, I used to wait for the bell to ring, but in my college courses I find myself almost disappointed when they end.

The most challenging part for me has been keeping up with the Coopersmith tests and trying to complete them while simultaneously doing work for my classes. Everyone at Sara Schenirer has been supportive and encouraging to help me get them done.

What skills are important for success in the BA in Psychology - Social Work Track?

It’s important for a social worker to be organized with their time and it is also imperative to stay positive when working with clients facing challenging situations.

How much time do you spend on coursework outside of class?

I estimate I spend at least eight hours a week on homework, and I try to fit it in any time I can during the day.

How does the schedule fit with your lifestyle?

I deliberately took a break from school and only enrolled in the program when I felt ready. I am super busy, but the schedule allows me to maintain a full-time 9-5 position as a utilization review specialist for a substance abuse rehabilitation program. I also appreciate that Sara Schenirer gives a winter break and does not have class immediately before or during Pesach. The semesters are not very long, so there is always an end in sight when it comes to coursework.

How would you describe the support you receive from Sara Schenirer staff and professors?

Everyone is positive, responsive, and always ready to help. At the beginning of each semester, our coordinator, Yael Schorr, meets with every student and reviews their progress and goes through their Coopersmiths. That was beneficial because I was feeling a little overwhelmed, but her support helped me get through everything.

What advice would you give to new students starting out?

Be on top of your Coopersmiths! Make sure you get those completed as soon as you can. Collaborating with your classmates is extremely important. Make a class chat early in the semester and work together to help each other. English courses are difficult but valuable, and Professor Nussbaum is incredible at helping students improve their writing skills.

What are your goals after earning your degree?

I plan to take a short break and then continue at Sara Schenirer to get my master’s degree in social work. The bachelor’s program surpassed my expectations and really has prepared me for graduate school. After I obtain my master’s, I have a few different ideas about the direction I may like to take. I currently work in substance abuse which has opened my mind to consider working with those clients privately. I also may like to be a social worker in a hospital, since I appreciate the work that healthcare professionals do in that setting.
