NYS Initial Certification FAQ
Can you describe the NYS Certification process? How long should it take?
Once your degree has been conferred, Mount Saint Vincent will need to recommend you. Once you have been recommended, then NY State will manually review your certification application and if everything is considered Met, they will issue your certificate(s). The process is as follows and will take time:
1) You must see that your degree has been awarded (Log onto Self-service, Student & Financial Aid, Student Records, Academic Transcript….Close to the top of the transcript, it should say Degree Awarded with the date of your graduation.)
2) The College has recommended you (you can check this by logging onto TEACH, clicking on Account Information, then College Recommendations…..you should see Initial and Professional recommendations for Birth-Grade 2 Regular Education and Students with Disabilities) (which will not happen until AFTER your degree is awarded)
3) Your certifications have been manually reviewed (you can check this by logging onto TEACH, clicking on Account Information, Certificates, and then for each certificate, click on View Evaluation History….if you do not see Manual Review listed, your certificates were not fully reviewed yet)
What is required in order to receive initial certification in Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2) and Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2) Students with Disabilities?

On top of the words: No Data Found, you should see either
Your DCJS and FBI fingerprints are on file OR Your NYC fingerprints have been received
If you did not fingerprint yet, you can find detailed instructions here.
(If you require an Ospra form, please contact your coordinator for assistance
2) Three Workshops – Child Abuse, Violence Prevention, and DASA (Bullying)

If needed, follow these instructions for the Child abuse and Violence prevention workshops.

I received this letter about my Initial certification from TEACH….what does it mean?
If you did not complete all of the required State exams, this letter indicates which tests are still missing.
What should I do if my Child Abuse or Violence Prevention workshops are not posted on TEACH?
Email the certificates, in PDF format, to [email protected] The email should include your name (as it appears on TEACH), the last four digits of your Social Security number and your date of birth. The subject line should say “workshops”. Only certificates that look like this can be sent (not the pretty certificate of completion that is sometimes sent at the completion).
