FAQ

What is the 7-12 Generalist Certification?

Teachers who are already certified in New York State in Special Education Birth-Grade 2, or Grades 1-6, can add a certificate in teaching Students with Disabilities Grades 7-12 Generalist. Those who complete the required coursework will be eligible to apply for Certification directly to NYSED through the pathway called “individual evaluation.”

How many courses are required to earn this certification?

The additional certification requires two courses that deal specifically and only with Grades 7-12.

Manhattanville College in partnership with Sara Schenirer will offer the two courses fully online:

  • EDU 5077 Adolescents with Learning Disabilities
  • EDU 5374 Curriculum and Methods

Coursework can be completed in just one semester.

Is Sara Schenirer a college?

No. Sara Schenirer is not a college or a degree-granting institution. Degrees are offered through accredited partner colleges. Generalist 7-12 students are non-matriculated students of Manhattanville college.

Which college have you partnered with to offer these courses?

We are proud to have partnered with Manhattanville College, a highly-ranked private, liberal arts college offering undergraduate and graduate degrees, located in Westchester County, NY. All degree programs offered at Manhattanville College are authorized and approved by the New York State Education Department. The college is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and it has received national accreditation for its teaching programs through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)

Which additional requirements are there for certification?

Students who have not already done so, will also need to take the:

  • NYS Content Specialty Test Multi-subject Grades 7-12
  • Autism Workshop (available online at this link)
  • DASA Workshop

Students who do not already have, will also need 6 credits each in Math, Science, Social Sciences, and English Language Arts. Any relevant courses, any time, any accredited college, grades of C or above, will count. Anything that may be needed may be earned at the undergraduate level.

The Manhattanville College School of Education Graduate Advising Office can give you an estimate, based on many years of experience, of what you may need. They can guide you through the process of applying for the additional certificate. Certification is at the sole decision of the New York State Education Department.

Will I be able to work while taking these courses?

Since this entails taking two courses during Spring semester and is offered in an asynchronous online format, it should not preclude the option of maintaining employment while taking the course. Of course, the workload is significant and will likely require a schedule adjustment or perhaps a reduction of your regular workload
